For heaven's sake, having seen the inner workings of the watch, don't get cynical

"Don't give up your ideals. Don't compromise. Don't turn to expediency. And don't for heaven's sake, having seen the inner workings of the watch, don't get cynical.

No, don't get cynical. Don't get cynical because look at yourselves and what you are willing to do, and recognize that there are millions and millions of Americans out there who want what you want. Who want it to be that way--who want it to be a shinning city on a hill..."

This was what Ronald Reagan said to his staff after they lost to Gerald Ford in the 1976 Republican National Convention. People who are cynical are those who look down on others while feeling powerless. "Don't be cynical" is not to look down on others and not to feel powerless. Young people should be busy learning and creating things. There is no time to be cynical. Young people should also stay away from cynical old farts. Their thoughts and actions are toxic.
